Background/Discussion
The City Council approved $405,000.00 in the FY 23 CIP for the Manawa City Playground Upgrade, Project R23-11. The current play structure was installed in 1997 and is in need of improvement. The park is one of the few opportunities for recreation within the neighborhood and the residents have expressed interest in the park addressing the specific needs of the residents and offer a wide variety of recreational opportunity.
The proposed improvements include internal walking paths, a basketball court, play structure and a number of free standing interactive sensory pieces. A sensory garden is also being proposed.
The overall project budget of $405,000 includes design fees, which are $30,800, which leaves $374,200 for construction. The current cost opinion has the probable construction cost at $453,149, which exceeds the budget by $78,949. The design was reviewed and $79,000 in savings has been identified. This savings includes omitting the skate park elements, a free standing play feature, and shelter. These elements are still important to the overall playground improvement and will be submitted for approval in the FY 24 CIP as Phase II improvements.
Given the time of year and the lead time to get equipment, construction on the playground will start in spring of 2023.
